Discover the unique art of green woodworking during Explore Greenwood Box-Making on the Lathe at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Open to all skill levels, this hands-on workshop introduces participants to the fascinating process of creating shrink boxes using the natural movement of wood.
Students will learn to turn boxes from green wood before fitting a separate dry wooden disk into a specially created groove. As the green wood dries, it naturally shrinks around the disk, locking the bottom securely into place without glue or fasteners.
Throughout the workshop, participants will create multiple boxes while experimenting with different shapes and styles. Special attention will also be given to understanding and predicting wood movement—an essential skill for achieving a successful fit.
Whether you’re new to woodturning or looking to expand your woodworking skills, this workshop offers the opportunity to explore a remarkable traditional joinery technique while creating functional, handcrafted pieces.
