Slow down, observe the natural world and sharpen your artistic skills during the Ecological Illustration Workshop, a Branch Out event hosted by Smokies Life.
Held along the Fighting Creek Nature Trail in the Sugarlands area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Gatlinburg, this hands-on workshop invites artists of all skill levels to explore the connections between art and the natural environment.
Participants will have the opportunity to practice their observational skills while taking inspiration from the plants, wildlife and landscapes of the Smokies. The workshop is hosted by Laurie McDowell, Smokies Life’s 2026 Steve Kemp writer and illustrator in residence.
Whether you’re an experienced artist or simply interested in trying something new, this workshop offers a creative way to experience the Smokies and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world around you.

Cost: $45 for current Smokies Life Park Keepers
Membership in Smokies Life is required to attend Branch Out events. If you are not already a member, you can join and attend for $85, which includes a $40 basic Park Keeper membership and the $45 event registration fee.
Participation fees help cover the costs of planning and hosting Branch Out programs, while additional revenue supports projects and services benefiting Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
