Stargazing in Cades Cove
The folks at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, have done it again! They’ve teamed up with the Smoky Mountains Astronomical Society to offer and amazing stargazing program in Cades Cove!
The stargazing event is Saturday, September 19th and begins at 7:30pm. There will be experienced astronomers and several telescopes on hand so you can have the greatest stargazing experience possible. You’ll have the opportunity to see the true beauty of the autumn sky’s position of stars, galaxies and constellations, including the Milky Way.
Park Ranger Mika Maslona, said “It’s a great opportunity to gaze at the star-studded sky without the obstruction of artificial light as seen in developed areas outside the park. People will be amazed at the vast depths of this planetary world and all that they can see in the complete darkness. This program mixes astronomy, legends, and the beauty of the stars to create a worthwhile exploration into the wonders of the heavens.”
If you plan on attending this amazing event, you should park near the orientation shelter at the entrance to the Cades Cove Loop Road. A park ranger will walk the group to a nearby field, which is about one-third of a mile from the parking area, where you’ll have the chance to view the beautiful autumn night sky.
Remember, it’s getting cooler at night, especially in the mountains, so dress warm and bring a flashlight. You can also bring a lawn chair or blanket and maybe even some binoculars to do your own viewing.
In case of rain or cloud cover where night sky views are not visible, the program will be postponed. No vehicles are allowed to drive to the site. Carpooling is strongly encouraged. To be sure the event will take place, give the folks at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park a call, on Saturday at 865-448-4104
