What To Do On A Snowy Day In The Smokies? Whether coming up on that time of year when that frozen white stuff is going to start peppering down from the skies, particularly in the higher elevations of the Smokies. When those snow days arrive, don’t stay cooped up in your hotel or cabin; make the most of it. Naturally, we’ve got a few suggestions for things you can do, whether you’re in Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg or Sevierville.
At Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort, snowy days are the best days. Located atop Mt. Harrison, this year-round attraction sparkles the brightest in winter thanks to its outdoor slopes, which benefit from both natural and manufactured snow. The best way to get to the resort is by riding the Aerial Tramway from downtown Gatlinburg. It’s a fun attraction in its own right, offering great views of nearby snow-covered mountains and
valleys.
At the top, Ober Gatlinburg offers eight ski slopes ranging from beginner to advanced, and there’s a Terrain Park that allows snow boarders to get up to speed and even grab a little air on the way down the mountain. Ski instruction and equipment rentals are available. For those not interested in strapping on a pair of skis or a snowboard, there’s a 10-lane snow-tubing course that lets guests ages 6 and older enjoy downhill
action for up to an hour and a half. Inside the resort, there’s also an ice skating rink where you can strap on a pair of blades and glide your way to wintertime fun.
Don’t forget that Great Smoky Mountains National Park is also a beautiful sight in winter, especially when there’s a shimmering, pristine blanket of snow on the ground. We don’t recommend getting out on the hiking trails unless you’re an experienced, well-equipped hiker, but you won’t forget a scenic drive around the Cades Cove community or Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. Just make sure that the roads are
open, clear and safe for driving.
