The Island had its VIP opening last Thursday and opened to the public Friday. The main attraction is the wheel. The wheel stands at 200 feet high and provides amazing views of the area for both new and returning visitors. I had the opportunity to ride the wheel on VIP day and it was an amazing experience. Once I got my ticket I was directed to a gondola and my ride began. As soon as it started moving I could see the area in a whole new perspective. As I looked out one side I could see Pigeon Forge and the National Park while the other way Sevierville. It was a clear day and as I was looking out I could see the details in the mountains which made for the perfect backdrop for taking pictures. The ride gives guests 3 complete rotations and 1 that stops to load passengers at the bottom. At night the wheel is lite up in different colors which provides its own show. Once the ride was complete it was time to discover The Island. There are numerous shops to choose from from a unique keepsake or a simple t-shirt. The restaurants that are open are Timberwood Grille and Mellow Mushroom. The Timberwood Grille has a rustic, mountain lodge feel and unique food titles such as Stout Fondue and Black Jack Wings. Mellow Mushroom provides a funky vibe and has delicious pizzas with Dude’s Daiquiris which provides daiquiris. This past weekend there was a live band providing entertainment Friday and Saturday night which created a relaxed atmosphere. The feeling while at The Island makes you forget you are right off the parkway. The Island is a great place to take your family or that someone special.
