GSMNP National Trails Day

June 6, 2026

Join the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club for the 29th Annual National Trails Day Event and spend a rewarding day giving back to the trails of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

This long-standing volunteer tradition brings together outdoor enthusiasts from across the region to help rehabilitate and maintain heavily used sections of trail while enjoying the beauty of the Smokies and the camaraderie of fellow hikers and conservation supporters.

Each year, nearly 100 volunteers participate in this meaningful day of trail work, learning, and community.

Event Overview

Volunteers will meet at Sugarlands Visitor Center before being divided into crews of 6–8 people and assigned to trail maintenance areas. Experienced crew leaders will provide guidance, instruction, and all necessary tools throughout the day, making this event welcoming for both experienced hikers and first-time volunteers.

At the end of the workday, participants will gather for a picnic and door prizes at Metcalf Bottoms.

Work Areas

Volunteer crews will work along sections of the Appalachian Trail between Icewater Spring Shelter and Double Springs Shelter.

Possible trail work activities may include:
