Discover the creative and hands-on art of gourd crafting in this immersive multi-day workshop, open to beginners and experienced artists alike. Gourding For the Love of It – Metal Leaf offers a comprehensive introduction to both foundational techniques and more advanced surface design methods in a supportive, exploratory environment.
Workshop Overview
Participants will begin with the essential preparation process, including safe and effective use of power tools for cutting, cleaning, and sanding gourds. From there, the course expands into a blend of foundational and intermediate design techniques, giving students the opportunity to explore a wide range of creative applications.
Instruction will include:
- Design development, planning, and placement
- Wood burning techniques for detailed surface work
- Dyeing and color application methods
- Metal leaf application for luminous, textured finishes
- Stipple carving for dimensional surface design
Throughout the workshop, students will experiment with gourds, metal leaf, dyes, and acrylic paints to build both technical skill and personal artistic expression.
Final Projects
By the end of the course, each participant will complete three finished works:
- One gourd featuring dyeing techniques
- One gourd showcasing metal leaf application
- One gourd demonstrating stipple carving
This workshop is designed to encourage exploration, creativity, and confidence in working with natural materials. Students will leave with both finished artwork and a strong foundation in multiple gourd art techniques.
