Elk in the Smokies with Smokies Life

October 9, 2026

Get a closer look at one of the Smokies’ most iconic animals during Elk in the Smokies, a Branch Out event hosted by Smokies Life.

Participants will join a naturalist-led ramble through the Oconaluftee Visitor Center area near Cherokee, where they’ll learn more about the elk that call Great Smoky Mountains National Park home.

The program takes place during the height of the elk rut, the annual breeding season when elk are especially active. This is an exciting time to observe these impressive animals and learn more about their behavior, habitat and role in the Smokies ecosystem.

Whether you’re an experienced wildlife watcher or simply want to learn more about the park’s elk, this naturalist-led experience offers a unique opportunity to explore the Smokies and see these magnificent animals in their natural environment.
